Love, vulnerability, longing for freedom, and fighting for justice. Le Corsaire is an epic whole-evening ballet in the classic tradition with magnificent ensemble pieces and romantic encounters between Conrad the pirate and his beloved Medora. This masterpiece is often presented in the form of short extracts. The Royal Swedish Opera now takes on the full version for the first time. It is a feast for the senses!
Lord Byron, superstar of the Romantic movement, wrote The Corsair in 1814. It is an adventure story in verse featuring pirates and slave traders, a dream of a distant time and a place. The poem inspired various musical interpretations by, among others, Verdi, Berlioz and Elgar. Best known is the ballet Le Corsaire from 1856 by master choreographer Marius Petipa with its famous pas de deux. The Spanish choreographer José Martinez has created a high-paced, intense contemporary version.
