A double bill presenting two legendary choreographers! In Mats Ek’s new work we will experience moments of tension between couples, accompanied by Anders Hillborg’s music and with set and costume design by Marie-Louise Ekman. Royal Ballet’s resident choreographer Sir Wayne McGregor has created Infra to evocative music by Max Richter and sets by celebrated artist Julian Opie.
Mats Ek is known and loved for his personal, willful interpretations of classical works, including Giselle, Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, Gluck’s opera Orphée et Eurydice and Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, which in Mats Ek’s version became the ballet success Juliet & Romeo. He has now created A Cup of Coffee for the Royal Swedish Ballet in which an elderly couple’s everyday activities are set against the emotional tension between young women and men. The choreography was created to Anders Hillborg’s delicate yet powerful cello concerto. Among the dancers: Ana Laguna, Yvan Auzely, Lisa Drake, and – for the first time on the Royal Swedish Opera stage – ballet director Nicolas Le Riche.
Sir Wayne McGregor is another ballet star, currently at the Royal Ballet in London. In his Infra we encounter life below the city streets. It is a captivating, moving experience with twelve dancers exploring human interaction to hypnotic animations and bittersweet music. The piece from 2008 now premieres in Sweden with the Royal Swedish Ballet.
