The Duke of Mantua is living it up without any moral concerns, and his jester, Rigoletto, is cheering him on. But when a nobleman puts a curse on the duke and his jester, Rigoletto’s life changes dramatically. He is also a frightened and over-protective father who worries about Gilda, his daughter, who wants to see the world. How can he protect her?
Rigoletto premiered in Venice in 1851. It is one of Verdi’s darkest and most dramatic operas. Sofia Adrian Jupither’s pared down 2018 production focuses on powerful men and vulnerable women in a world dominated by fear. “Sofia Adrian Jupither’s production of Rigoletto at the Royal Swedish Opera is very, very good” (Dagens Nyheter).
