The Swedish tenor Joachim Bäckström commenced the 2023/2024 season with the world premiere of the opera Mythomania by Paula af Malmborg Ward at the Göteborg Opera where he sang the role of Francis. He also returned to the title role of Peter Grimes at the Janáček Theatre in Brno and makes his role debut as Parsifal at the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm.

Joachim Bäckström was the previous season a guest at the Finnish National opera where sang Siegmund in a new production of Die Walküre. Joachim also appeared in the role of Hoffmann in Les contes d’Hoffmann at the Göteborg Opera and as Cavaradossi in Tosca at the Royal Swedish Opera. The season of 2021/22 entailed two iconic title role debuts for Mr. Bäckström, first as Peter Grimes in David Radok’s new production at Janáček Theatre in Brno, followed by Don Carlos at Theater Basel.

Joachim Bäckström is engaged as a guest soloist at the Göteborg Opera where he has appeared in roles such as Don José in Carmen, Turiddu in Cavalleria Rusticana, Michel in Martinů’s Trois fragments de Juliette, Grigorij in Boris Godunov, Theseus in Monster in the Maze and Laertes in Thomas’ Hamlet.

In the season of 2019/20, Joachim Bäckström made his role debut as Siegmund in Die Walküre at the Royal Swedish Opera which awoke international attention and the season before Joachim sang his first Erik in Der fliegende Holländer at the Finland National Opera.

Joachim Bäckström has previously appeared as Don José in Carmen at the Finland National Opera, the Royal Danish Opera, Opera Østfold in Norway at the Malmö Opera and at the Wuppertaler Bühnen in Germany. He has sung Tamino in Die Zauberflöte at Le Grand Théâtre de Genève, and the Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen and with the same role he made his Royal Swedish Opera debut. 2017 Joachim won great acclaim for his interpretation of Hoffmann in Les contes d’Hoffmann at Musiktheater im Revier in Gelsenkirchen.

At the Malmö Opera Joachim has performed the roles of des Grieux in Massenet’s Manon, Rodolfo in La bohème and Roméo in Roméo et Juliette, Tamino, Pinkerton in Madame Butterfly, Steva in Jenufa, Don José, as well as Cavaradossi in a chamber version of Tosca on tour. Joachim has sung Atis in Joseph Martin Krauss’ Proserpin at Musikfestspiele Potsdam Sanssouci and Duca in Rigoletto, which he performed at NorrlandsOperan in Sweden.

Joachim Bäckström studied at the Royal Danish Opera Academy in Copenhagen and made his debut in January 2010 as Don José at the Royal Danish Opera.
