Joakim Wangendahl was born in 1962 in Karlskoga. In 1972 the family moved to Degerfors where he started playing football in his spare time but also trumpet in the municipal music school.
He had originally intended to become a carpenter or a soccer player, but life wanted differently.
During the years 1979–82, he studied trumpet at Kapellsberg folk high school with Claes Strömblad.

In 2000 he studied with William Scarlett, Jay Friedman and Michael Mulcahy in Chicago.
In 1995 he became a member of the trumpet ensemble "Ten of the best", led by Otto Sauter. In this constellation he has played with trumpeters such as Allen Vizzutti, Bobby Shew, John Wallace, Pierre Thibaud, Thierry Caens, James Thompson, Erik Veldkamp, Miroslav Kejmar, Ingolf Burkhardt and Bob Lanese. The ensemble is often on tour in Europe and Japan and has made several recordings.
Joakim has been a member of Stockholm's Sinfonietta for two decades.
